My review:
If you haven't read this book then I suggest you go read it before reading this review. Everyone told me to go into it without knowing anything about it and now I agree with them. Not knowing what it's about makes it more mysterious and interesting to read, so if you haven't read it then go read it!
Do not carry on reading if you haven't read We Were Liars, this is your last warning.
I found this book beautifully written, the metaphor at the start where her father 'shot' her was so well done I actually believed he shot her for a second, but then she just used it to show her emotions of her father leaving them. The book was then well paced making it seem longer then what it actually was, I honestly enjoyed the way it was written.
Then the mystery throughout the book of what happened on summer 15 had me so intrigued with the book. I couldn't put it down because I needed to know what happened. Why didn't Gat or any of them bother writing back to her? They didn't seem like great family, friends and boyfriend then but now I understand why. I knew something big happened by the way everyone acted around Cady. Just the whole mystery of the accident made the book so much more interesting to read, it gave it that creepy feel.
However, I didn't expect that ending. I'm still in shock with it and I found it so clever how E.Lockhart tricked me. I believed Gat, Mirren and Johnny were really there on the island but when I realised and read that they died in the fire I was completely shocked. Mind blown. Such a shocking plot twist I didn't see coming. The whole plan was stupid, I get they were a little drunk and fifteen but were they really that dumb? Setting a fire on each floor, clearly they were going to get trapped. The book should be called We Were Stupid because they really were. I get why it's called 'We Were Liars' the clue for what happened was in the title and throughout the book, with the children believing the island was haunted and them having nightmares. I'm not sure what I think Gat, Johnny and Mirren were I've heard people think they were ghosts and others think they were just her hallucinations. I had tears in my eyes when she let them go, that's what made it seem more hallucinations then ghosts but who knows? The way they went was just so beautiful and then I loved how it ended with her starting to move on with her life. To accept what happened and to learn to move on from it, the accident, the tragedy.
Robyn.
