Author(s): Sarah J. Maas
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
Non-spoilers section:
I finished Heir of Fire a week ago, but wasn't able to write a review for it since I was busy with college. I'm going to start with a non-spoiler section, I won't have much to say as it's the third book in the series and so much happens. After Crown of Midnight, I wasn't sure where this book was going, a part from what we found out from the previous books. This book had a gripping storyline, that had you hooked with every page. Everyone who has read Sarah J. Mass' books, all know that she leaves her books with a shocking cliff hanger. Of course: she did it again. Honestly, this series is one of the best fantasy series I have ever read and if you haven't picked it up then you need to.
WARNING: DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVE NOT READ HEIR OF FIRE OR AND OF THE THRONE OF GLASS BOOKS.
Spoilers section:
We were left with that big shocking truth at the end of Crown of Midnight. The truth where we all learnt with Chaol that Celaena is the rightful heir to Terrasen's throne - Aelin Galathynius. Now the secret is out and Celaena opens up more as a character and we start to learn more about her past. We see her as a child, as Aelin and see her with a young Dorian as well. We see what happened to her on that night and how she became Celaena Sardothien. I loved how Celaena's character grew through this book, seeing her learning her new powers and coming to turns with Nehemia's death and everyone she has lost. This book was the turning point in Celaena's life. She's gone from an Assassin to a Queen.
I felt really sorry for Dorian in this book. I loved Celaena and Dorian in Thrown of Glass, but I also loved Celaena and Chaol in Crown of Midnight. It was good to see Dorian finding happiness and moving on from Celaenea. I didn't like him and Sorscha since I shipped Dorian and Celaena, but I was glad he had someone to help him and to make him happy. I hated how Chaol abandoned him. My heart broke when Sorscha was beheaded. I cried for him, I cried for his loss. A part of me had a feeling Sorscha was a spy, why would you work for the King that killed your family? That storyline ended heartbreakingly, but I'm seeing Celaena and Dorian in the future (hopefully)! That ending with the King putting the collar on Dorian broke my heart even more. We all know what that means and I hope Celeana comes back to save him, as well as kill the King and take the thrown. Poor Dorian!
Chaol. I really don't know what to say about him. He annoyed me throughout this book, abandoning Dorian and not deciding what team he's on! Chaol has always been loyal to Dorian and always helping others. It was only towards the end when he started making up his mind and seeing that his friend needed his help. I hope Chaol develops more of a character in the next book.
We then meet new characters, first of being the Fae Prince, Rowan. At first I wasn't sure about him. He wasn't eager to help Celaena and he's the secretive stubborn kind of guy. When he opens up we get this other character, a character I loved, a character that becomes friends with Celaena. Their relationship is so intimate, not in a romance way, but its great to see Celaena have someone like that in her life. Then we meet Aedion Ashryver, Celaena's cousin and childhood friend. At the start I didn't piratically like him, he was arrogant and he worked for the King. However, that changes when we see his real side, a side where he is loyal and determined to find his long lost Queen and take down the King. I really hope he gets to reunite with Celaena in the next book. We have another new character, Manon Blackbeak, heir of the Blackbeak Coven of the ironteeth witches and leader of the thirteen. We see they're apart of the King's new dark plans, and were not sure what they are yet. She is a bloodthirsty character but I loved seeing her grow, seeing her battle to become Wing Leader. In the end she starts to believe that she has a heart and soul and that her Grandmother's rules might be wrong. I'm interested to see where she goes next.
This book was so good all together, the chracters development and world building was just incredible. It was such a good read. This book showed us more of the world and the past and the plot is developing so much. I'm not sure where this is going, but we still have to find the Wyrdkeys. I'm not sure who Celaena is going to end up with, I'll be happy with either Dorian (mainly Dorian) or Chaol. I do believe that since she is Queen and their going to overthrow the King, she and Dorian will take the thrown together. Chaol can just continue being the captain and a LOYAL friend.
